6th W.A.T.E.R. Summer School @ IST ULisboa 2022

FUNDEC and IST hosted the 6th edition of the W.A.T.E.R. Summer School from 18th to 22nd July co-organized with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. W.A.T.E.R. stands for Workshop on Advanced measurements Techniques and Experimental Research, and it is a hands-on event an advanced training school in hydraulics and fluid mechanics. This workshop is aimed at PhD candidates, researchers, and anyone seeking advanced training in state-of-the-art measurements techniques.

The 6th edition was organized by two members of CERIS: prof. Rui Ferreira (IST) and Rui Aleixo (IST-ID) with the logistical support of FUNDEC and the resources and experimental installations made available by the Laboratory of Hydraulics of the IST.

Twenty participants, coming from different universities such as the TU Darmstatd (Germany) Imperial College of London (United Kingdom), TU Delft (Netherlands) and Politecnico de Torino (Italy) and Electricité de France (France) to name a few, gather at IST to learn about measurement techniques with an international body of lecturers: Ana Margarida Ricardo (IST-ID, Portugal), Prof. Elsa Carvalho (FEUP, Portugal), Marie Burckbuchler (Ubertone, France), Prof. Margaret Chen (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium), Prof. Massimo Guerrero (University of Bologna, Italy), Prof. Maurizio Righetti (Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Italy), Prof. Rui Ferreira (University of Lisboa, Portugal), and Rui Aleixo (IST-ID, Portugal).

By partnering with industry partners, namely Ubertone and Dantec, the participants had access to state-of-the-art techniques involving different physical principles. The most advanced acoustic Doppler techniques allowing profiling the flow and developed by Ubertone were presented during the workshop. Optical based techniques provided by Dantec, namely Laser Doppler Velocimetry, and Particle Image Velocity, allowed the participants to contact with the most modern instruments available.
